🎭 The 4-Year Break That Changed His Life
In a recent interview (February 2026), Madhavan opened up about a four-year sabbatical he took from acting starting in 2011. The turning point came while shooting a Tamil song in Switzerland:
“I was shooting in Switzerland with orange pants and green shirt for a Tamil song. I saw this Swiss farmer sitting there, looking at us with complete disdain, sipping a cup of tea. I was really offended, but then it struck me suddenly. I am literally dancing to other people’s tunes. I am a public speaker, I know how to handle a gun, fly remote planes, ride horses. I am showing none of it in my movies. The only thing I was trying to do was to woo the audience, which will make me a superstar. I realized the mistake I was doing.”
His wife Sarita noticed his unhappiness and asked: “What’s wrong with you? You are going for work like you want to come back from it.”
During His Break, Madhavan:
- Stopped doing ad films
- Grew a beard and traveled across India
- Spoke to rickshaw pullers to understand real-world struggles and their concerns
- Gained insights about “what really matters to them, what’s the real cost of stuff that bothers them”
“That insight for four years is probably what I’m eating off right now.”
When he returned in 2016, he looked for new directors with forward-thinking vision, leading to critically acclaimed performances in Vikram Vedha, Rocketry, Shaitaan, and the Dhurandhar franchise .
